    “Queer as German Folk”

Imagine Life to be Colourful: A World that Celebrates Diversity!

    Exhibition Opening: 16 October 2020, Friday, 18:00-21:00

    Exhibition Period: 17 October, 2020 – 31 January, 2021

Languages: Chinese, English, Chinese Sign Language

Location: Department of Culture and Education of the German Consulate General Shanghai, 101 Cross Tower, 318 Fu Zhou Lu, 200001 Shanghai

Admission: Free, online registration required via Huodongxing

The touring exhibition “Queer as German Folk” will be showcasing in Shanghai, after stops in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Mexico City and Berlin. The exhibition is created in the commemoration of the Stonewall riots 50 years ago, and a collaboration of the Goethe-Institut New York, the  Schwules  Museum Berlin (“Gay Museum”) and the  Bundeszentrale  für  politische Bildung (“Federal Agency for Civic Education”) in Berlin.

“Queer as German Folk” tells the stories of people fighting for visibility, recognition and equality over the past 50 years in both parts of Germany and in the re-united one. It shows West-German gay movements and lesbian church groups in the GDR – lines and connections that have merely been drawn –, the community of people of colour, feminist activists, trans* and intersex people, and the queer history in the GDR. A wide collection of texts, photographs, videos, conversations and more will serve your inspiration, revealing non-binary, fluid, queer identities that are personal, by times surprising, by times stimulating, and always very colourful.

The curators Birgit Bosold and Carina  Klugbauer  of  Schwules  Museum Berlin created a multifaceted, brave, and encouraging touring exhibition that presents more than 100 exhibits of queer history. And actually, they even go beyond pure Stonewall-narratives, showing perspectives and identities that tend to be too often overseen. The form of this exhibition really meets its content: like a spotlight pointing at various queer lives/ conflicts/ riots/ celebrations/ art happening simultaneously in different places, you as the visitor has to explore and to choose where to point the lights at, and how to draw the connecting lines.

Moreover, the German born DJ Tobias Patrick who lives and works in Shanghai will be indulging your ears this evening with a live-mix of house, disco and pop music.
